UV inks and varnishes were first introduced to the Graphic Industry in the early 1970s. However, it is only over the last twenty or so years that their use has become widespread. UV technology provides some considerable technical advantages for the printer, whatever the type of printing process employed (offset, letterpress, flexo, waterless, varnishing, serigraphy, etc.).
• Productivity gains due diate drying under the Ultra Violet radiation, enabling all types of overprinting or cutting and folding operations to be carried out immediately after printing.
• High print quality (excellent gloss, good physical and chemical resis- tance).
• Clean technology without any VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), thereby preserving the environment.
Troubleshooting
Important innovations have been made in the formulation of Offset or “paste” inks over the last few years, keeping pace with the evolutions that have marked the Graphic Industry :
• The appearance of high technology printing equipment with faster and faster printing speeds, requiring inks with excellent printing stability.
• A diversification in the range of printed substrates (recycled paper, more varied synthetic substrates, etc.) requiring more and more versatile inks.
• An evolution in environmental legislation (VOC emissions, recycling of packaging, etc.).
Troubleshooting
UV dryers comprise two elements:
• UV lamp, which acts as the ultraviolet radiation emission source.
• Reflectors, which enable the maximum quantity of energy to be focused on the ink film and which contribute to regulating the temperature.
The fount solution plays a vital role in the offset printing process: it is a key factor in obtaining high quality prints (contrast between solid print areas and half tones, gloss, etc.). A well adjusted fount solution is also synonymous with economies, particularly in terms of setting up the press.
Therefore, for the printer, ascertaining and obtaining the most suitable fount solution for the printing process is justified for both qualitative and economic reasons.
In order to properly control the fount solution, it is important firstly to determine the properties of the tap water before understanding the different characteristics of the fount solution.
